This year we became members of 1% for the Planet, a global network of businesses, nonprofits, and individuals working together for a healthy planet. Members donate 1% of their annual revenues to domestic and international grassroots organizations that make a difference in their respective communities.
Beginning this month we will not just pledge one percent of our revenues to the environment through 1% for the Planet, but also provide a 5% discount on our price plans to network members to encourage others to join as well.
For the last 9 years, we have been in business building booking software for adventure tourism providers. Most adventure tourism is deeply rooted in nature and it nearly automatically creates a strong sense of responsibility for the welfare of our planet. In the travel industry, we also see a growing desire for more conscious consumption, not only of products but also where and how people spend their holidays. Through this initiative and the 5% discount for our clients, we’d like to help a little in creating a more sustainable sector.
Yvon Chouinard, who co-founded 1% for the Planet puts it as “This is not philanthropy. This should be a cost of doing business. It’s paying rent for our use of the planet”.
Besides “paying rent” as a company, we try to reduce our ecological footprint where can by not taking unnecessary trips. Although most of our interaction with customers already happens online we still have occasional road trips that we carefully plan to not make unnecessary kilometers.
About 1% for the Planet
1% for the Planet was started in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies. As lovers of the outdoors, they knew they had a responsibility to protect our planet, as do we all, and decided to give 1% of their sales back to the environment. Today there are more than 3,000 members each contributing 1% of their annual revenue to nonprofits doing important work to protect our planet.
